Some Tips To Consider When Buying A Rotary Shaft Seal

By Betty Edwards

In the home or the factory, virtually all mechanical equipment require lubrication to operate aptly. That being said, these machines are designed with a Rotary Shaft Seal that regulated the lubrication medium, thereby reducing leakages and loss of oil. Normally, the pump is a low-pressure seal that fits between a stationary component in which a rotating shaft pumps the lubrication fluid.

There are various profiles of the product in the market and many at times, consumers are challenged while deliberating on the best seal that will ultimately solve their needs. One design common to many individuals is the TC design. Most pump seals are designed with a pre-energized lip and a secondary lip without a spring, though the secondary lip may miss in some products.

As if that is not enough, they can also be categorized according to the application. Some are used in automobiles. For instance, the bearing seals in most trailers. There are other profiles specifically meant to withstand high thermal conditions and high-pressure systems. The types depend on the direction of rotation. They include, directional, bi-directional and non-directional. Besides these, there are models with enclosed rubber while other profiles feature reinforced or non-reinforced structures.

In all the types and profiles that they come in, they all have one application in common; pumping lubricating fluid. The seal has two main components. They include, a rotating shaft and the other is a pump housing. If the seal were not there, the lubricating fluid would leak, and that leads to additional, unnecessary costs. It is this seal that has led people t conjure all sorts of names for it, including pump seal and water pump.

Technically referred to as end-face seals, the rotary seal was first discovered in the nineteen hundreds, albeit their popularity began gaining ground after the World War II, specifically during the nineteen forties. As expected, it became widely used in homes and the industrial sector. Some internal components that make the product so unique are the gland plate, spring and the clamp ring. And until now, there has not been a better alternative for the lubricating purposes.

Before the shaft seal was discovered, people majorly relied on gland packings and mechanical packings. They were designed well, though their ability to prevent leakages was low, and that made people less inclined to use them in machines. Moreover, the newly developed models reduce corrosion, thereby enhancing the durability of the equipment. Consequently, people realized a viable alternative in the product.

Some factors that you need to have at your fingertips while purchasing the product include the durability of the equipment. The shaft seals cost money and therefore, it is only economical to find a shaft that is highly durable. Preferably, find one that has a manufacturer's warranty, for it signals that the seal of the required standard quality.

One more thing that you need to consider is the sort of fluid medium that you will be using it on. And while the popular ones are used on oil, other are used on water or a semi-solid lubricant. Therefore, before setting out on the quest for these products, ask yourself the type of medium you will use it for.
